Mexico City: 18 governments discuss renewable energy and climate action


On 8-9 May, Climate Parliament co-hosted an international governmental event with the Mexican Energy Secretary and the Senate in Mexico City. In attendance was Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, the Secretary of Energy, as well as government and embassy representatives from countries around the world. Discussions centred on planning the upcoming Green Grid Initiative, and the path it should take. The Green Grid Initiative is a network of countries at the ministerial level, legislators and parliamentarians, and business leaders and experts from major companies and organisations.

Government representatives from 18 countries were joined by legislators, experts and business leaders to address the challenges of climate change through renewable energy development. The meeting took place at the former Senate Building in Mexico City, La Casona de Xicoténcatl.

The topics covered at this two-day event included:

  • ​Accelerating the expansion of renewable energy

  • Long-distance transmission and energy trading

  • Electric vehicles and smart grids

  • Minigrids for rural communities and small islands

  • Attracting investment and innovative financial instruments

  • The establishment of regional action groups

  • Developing the Joint Statement for the Green Grid Initiative
