This week, the Climate Parliament, in partnership with the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, hosted a high-level delegation of Chinese government officials, academics and policy experts in London and Edinburgh, for discussions with their UK counterparts on climate change, renewable energy and environmental policy.
The 7-person delegation included the deputy director general of China's National Centre for Climate Change and International Cooperation (NCSC) and the Division Director of the Department of Climate Change at the National Development and Reform Commission, as well as several prominent academics and policy researchers from the forefront of China's efforts to advance environmental policy, renewable energy technology, and climate science.
In a busy 4-day schedule of meetings encompassing London and Edinburgh, the delegates met with senior officials from the UK Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Energy & Climate Change Directorate of the Scottish Government, and from London City Hall; the chief executive of the UK's Committee on Climate Change; the co-Director of the Grantham Institute at the London School of Economics; the CEO of the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency; the Green Investment Bank; and climate specialists from concerned NGOs including ClientEarth, WWF Scotland, and the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition.
During the meetings, productive discussions were had concerning the UK's world-leading Climate Change Act of 2008 and the institutional set-up that governs climate and energy policy in the UK as a whole and in the devolved administration of Scotland, helping to raise awareness, develop capacity, and build cooperation of the participants on both sides. We're looking forward to continued work with China and the UK, helping to strengthen ties and collaboration between the two nations on arguably the most important issue facing both societies.
