Mini-grids are a fresh way of thinking about rural electrification. Instead of waiting years for national energy utilities to extend the grid, communities and small companies are taking matters into their own hands by combining the energy resources that are abundant in the local area - be they wind, solar, small hydro or waste biomass.
In conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Climate Parliament has produced an action pack for legislators across the less-industrialised world who want to help stimulate a boom in village-level renewable energy mini-grids.
